The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are two franchises with up and down histories, and they seem to be headed in different directions at this point in time. Both members of the AFC West, they have played some memorable games in the past, and their respective histories intersect in many instances.
San Diego has been in the league since back in the AFL days, but they’ve never won a Super Bowl. They were a struggling franchise for the majority of the 1980s and 1990s, making the playoffs in only six of twenty years during that time span. They’ve qualified four times in this decade, though, winning the West in four out of the last five seasons.
Oakland used to be a proud franchise, but poor player personnel decisions and off the field troubles have become the staple of Raider Nation. They have four World Championships to their credit, including three Super Bowl wins. The last came in 1983, though, and since then they have only won the division five times. The Raiders are known for their fans as much as anything else, and the loyalty and oft times volatility of their fan base helps push the rivalry with the Chargers, who have stolen their crown as the class of the West.
