The Houston Texans broke into the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team in the AFC South, and since then they have been competitive, but not extraordinary. Playing in the same division as Indianapolis, which has been one of the NFL’s dominant franchises over that time period, the Texans have struggled to take a step forward, but they have developed something of a healthy rivalry with their division opponent.
The Colts have the history, dating back to their days in Baltimore. They have won a championship with one Hall of Fame quarterback under center in Johnny Unitas and have won another with a future Hall of Famer at quarterback in Peyton Manning.
This rivalry is pushed forward by Houston’s desire to break into the playoff scene in the NFL. They have yet to post a winning record, but finished 8-8 in each of the last two seasons. Poised to take a step forward in 2009 with their young roster and developing talent, they will have to overcome the steady hand of Indy if they want to truly be a contender.
