Erik BedardFree Pick: Seattle Moneyline

Quietly and without much notice Seattle’s Eric Bedard has become his old self again. Sure, he might break down later in the year, but we are just trying to win some money for right now. Through 26 innings this year, Bedard has 29 strikeouts, a sign that shows that his good stuff might just be back. Bedard’s resurgence has everything to do with the improvements that he has made on his fastball, getting the velocity back up into the high-90s where it used to be. In addition, the left hander worked hard on his curveball during spring training, and that is paying dividends.

On Wednesday, Bedard will be taking the hill against the White Sox, a team that he has had good success against in his career. He’ll be facing a free swinging lineup, which should suit him perfectly. Expect Bedard to pile up strikeouts in a seven inning outing, turning the game over to Seattle’s strong bullpen.

On the other side of the docket will be Chicago’s Gavin Floyd, who looked good to start the season, but has fallen off in his last two starts. The young right hander has struggled with his command as of late, leaving a number of pitches right over the heart of the plate. He has never had much success against Seattle, going 1-1 against them with a 7.45 ERA last season. On top of that, he has a career ERA well over 8.00 against Seattle. A number of the hitters in this lineup have the young righty’s number, including Adrian Beltre and Ichiro, who have both battered him for average and for home runs. Expect him to get hit around a little bit in this game, which clearly favors the Mariners on the hill.

This is a time when you should get good value from the Seattle line. Though they aren’t playing their best baseball right now, they have a significant pitching advantage, especially considering the matchups. You should be able to get them on the plus side with the moneyline, but don’t be afraid to pay a little bit as the favorite if your book is asking that of you. Seattle will win this day game in Chicago on the strong left arm of Eric Bedard, as more and more people start to take notice of his resurgence.
