Don’t look now, but Kansas City’s Zack Greinke is the owner of a 34 inning scoreless streak, which stands as baseball’s longest since Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb went for 42 in 2007. Greinke might be the best pitcher that no one has ever seen right now, but it won’t be that way for long. With a dominating fastball that runs into the upper 90s, a plus curveball, and a deceptive changeup, Greinke has been able to both keep hitters off balance and overpower them in the early going.
Greinke would have to be the favorite against pretty much any pitcher right now, as his strikeout numbers are outrageous, and he has more success at home than on the road. It might be a stretch to expect him to continue his scoreless streak all the way through this one, but one shouldn’t count on him giving up too many runs, either.
Opposing Greinke will be Tigers rookie Rick Porcello, the youngest player in the Major Leagues right now. A first round draft pick two years ago, Porcello has been a fast riser with a high ceiling for his career. His 3.75 ERA thus far is good, but he will have to be at his absolute best to match Greinke. He will have to do it on the road against a Royals team with a bunch of left handed power bats that feast on right handed pitching.
Take the Royals here and ride the Zack Greinke train as long as it’s on the tracks. If Greinke gets the ball to his bullpen with the lead, don’t expect them to relinquish it, either. With the combination of Juan Cruz and Joakim Soria, Kansas City has a fierce one-two punch at the back line to hold the small leads they are given. Porcello will be good in this game, but no one is pitching better than the Kansas City ace at this point.
