New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox: Moneyline
Free Pick: Boston Moneyline
On Friday night at Fenway Park, the Yankees and Red Sox will get together for the first time in 2009, and the game will feature two of the AL’s best young arms. Boston’s Jon Lester came on in 2008, proving himself as a top of the rotation type of arm with his dominating three-pitch repertoire. The Yankees will counter with righty Joba Chamberlain, a guy who can sometimes be overpowering, but is often erratic.
Chamberlain has struggled early in the year with his location and consistency, and has been the victim of high pitch counts in the early innings. In his last start, the 24-year old did not make it out of the fifth inning, after throwing 94 pitches and surrendering a number of hard hit balls. He will be facing one of the league’s hottest lineups in Boston.
After starting 2-6, the Red Sox have stormed back to win 7 straight and have regularly hit double digits in the run column during that stretch. They are 7-2 in Fenway Park this season, and are coming off of a home sweep of the once-hot Minnesota Twins. In throwing Jon Lester on Friday, they will be sending out a guy who has thrived in the home environment. Lester is 17-3 in his career in Fenway Park, and he has been especially good against the Yankees. Last season, he was 2-0 against New York, posting an almost non-existent 1.19 ERA.
Take the home team here, with the better pitcher and the hotter lineup. New York will have plenty of chances to knock off Boston this year, but they won’t get in the win column during the first matchup. Expect the patient Boston lineup to work on Chamberlain’s pitch count, and expect Lester to continue what he began in his last start against the Orioles, where he went seven scoreless innings of nine strikeout baseball.
