What is better than when the two winningest programs in college football history tee it up for glory and a chance at 2009 redemption? If you’re a college football bettor, nothing is better because this game represents the best chance to get on top of your man this weekend. Notre Dame beat up on Michigan in South Bend last year, but so did everyone else. This year’s a different story, as Rich Rodriguez has more of his players in place, and has a quarterback capable of running his system.
In week one, both teams shined, as Notre Dame took down Nevada and Michigan slapped around an underrated Western Michigan team at home. Nevada ranks among the worst teams in the country in terms of pass defense, so it was no surprise that Jimmy Clausen was able to do his thing through the air.
What’s interesting about this game is all of the trends and betting patterns that bring us to our betting conclusion. Michigan has been tabbed as a 3.5 point underdog on their home turf, which until last year had been an unheard of happening in Ann Arbor. In this series, the underdog has been great, covering the spread in 17 of the last 20 and winning 13 of those games outright. This is a positive sign for Michigan, who looked to have rallied around their coach last week in the home opener.
The line opened at a very low number of Notre Dame -4, which is odd given the hype associated with the Fighting Irish this season. Coming off of two big wins over WAC opponents, having the higher ranking, and generally being thought of as superior, the line should have been higher. Naturally, the betting public has pounded the Notre Dame line, but what’s happened since then is worth taking note of. The line has actually moved down to 3.5, a clear sign that Vegas wants more money flowing in on the Notre Dame side.
Give us the home dog in a series that has been dominated by home dogs. With this line movement and the way Michigan needs this game, this is one bet that will feel comfortable for bettors come Saturday afternoon.
