Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears
3* Premium Selection: Detroit +10
The Detroit Lions head to Chicago knowing that they have finally ended their 19 game losing streak. The Lions’ win last Sunday gives this team a boost of energy that it missed since the first half of the 2007 season when they were 6-2. Rookie head coach Jim Schwartz’s presence is being felt, particularly on defense. Last year the Lions ranked dead last in points allowed (32.3) and yards (517).
In the first 3 games of the regular season the Lions are allowing 3.6 points and 127 yards less than last year. This is quite impressive considering that they already faced two tough undefeated opponents including the Saints and the Vikings. The Lions come to Soldier Field to face the Bears who have won two in a row but were fortunate that their last two opponents, the Steelers and Seahawks, each missed two field goal attempts. If Jeff Reed and Olindo Mare made those field goals, the Bears could easily be a 1-2 or even 0-3 instead of 2-1. So far the presence of Jay Cutler has not made Chicago’s offense more efficient thus far as the Bears rank 21st in points (19) and 20th in yards (315). The Bears have not been money as a heavy home favorite, going 1-5 ATS in their last 6 contests as a 3.5 to 10 point home favorite. One of these contests includes a 27-23 come from behind victory as a 13 point favorite against the Lions last year. The Bears will likely win but not by double digits. Expect the Lions to keep this one close.
