NFL Week 7 Recap

NFL Week 7 Recap

The seventh week of this NFL season was a recipe for disaster for the sportsbooks. Favorites dominated going 9-3-1 and most of the public’s favorite teams covered. The Pats covered 15.5 points against the Bucs, meanwhile the Colts covered 14 points against the Rams and the Cowboys covered 5.5 over the Falcons. The only real break that the books had over the weekend was when the Giants lost to Arizona Sunday night. On another note, each underdog that covered won the game outright. The Bills were a 7 point underdog and defeated the Panthers, despite having Ryan Fitzpatrick as quarterback. The Cards who were a 9 point underdog to the Giants by gametime, managed to shutdown Eli Manning and New York’s running game to come out with the victory. The Bengals demolished the Bears 45-10 as a 1 point home underdog. We had a very tough weekend and honestly were very lucky to come out 2-3-1 with a deficit of 4.29 units. Fortunately it was only our second losing weekend of the season so we can move on. The following are key events that took place in week 7.

Alex Smith brings life to San Fran’s offense: Down 21-0 to Houston at halftime, Mike Singletary decided to give backup QB Alex Smith a chance to prove himself. Smith clearly made the most of his opportunity, going 15/22, throwing 3 touchdowns to 1 interception in only half a game. Because of him the 49ers were able to almost pull off a remarkable comeback as they lost 24-21. Singletary confirmed that Smith will remain the starter and it will be interesting to see how his presence will help the 49ers who are currently 3-3 and no longer leading the NFC West.

Miles Austin is Dallas’ new number 1 receiver: Jerry Jones made the decision to release TO in the offseason under the assumption that this was the best move for his franchise and because he felt that he had enough depth at wide receiver. Roy Williams was pencilled in as the number one wideout at the beginning of the season. He got hurt and all of a sudden the Cowboys gave Miles Austin a chance to shine. It appears that he has developed into a lethal weapon for Tony Romo since he has 16 receptions for 421 yards and 4 touchdowns in his last 2 contests.

Sidney Rice is Favre’s go-to guy: If you want to be an established receiver in the National Football League, becoming Brett Favre’s favorite target is definitely a way to do it. Rice and Favre have developed a chemistry and as a result Rice has 16 receptions for 312 yards in his last 2 contests. He would have easily had 2 touchdowns against Pittsburgh if it weren’t for an outstanding defensive play by the one and only Troy Polomalu and a terrible tripping call by an official.

Arizona defeats Giants and leads NFC West: After starting the season sluggish and losing two of its first three contests, the Cards have won three in a row. They are beginning to look like a playoff contender again. Their last two victories were quite impressive as they defeated the Seahawks and the Giants on the road by a combined margin of 51-20. Arizona’s defense has been very efficient as of late, forcing 6 turnovers in those 2 road contests. The Cards again find themselves on top of the NFC West.

Saints prove that they are the most powerful franchise: New Orleans overcame a 24-3 deficit to comeback and defeat the Miami Dolphins 46-34. At this point, one must ask who will be able to stop these guys? New Orleans is averaging 39.7 points per game. They also lead the league in defensive turnovers (18) and defensive touchdowns (5). They are 6-0 straight up and ATS and are definitely worth playing as a favorite
