Premium Pick: Baltimore -3

This is an AFC Wildcard matchup featuring two teams who have debatably performed above expectations, each led by a rookie head coach. The Dolphins won the AFC East, finishing 11-5, winning 10 more games compared to last year. The Ravens reversed their wins/losses totals going from 5-11 in 2007 to 11-5 in 2008. Both teams experienced the same kind of success this season but one of these teams has a substantial advantage to win this one.

The Miami Dolphins have been quite impressive this year. They can be considered as an above average team but not a serious super bowl contender. The Ravens have proven this year that they are no ordinary team. It takes a serious super bowl contender to take them down. Their losses this year were against Pittsburgh (2 times)(13-3), Tennessee (13-3), Indianapolis (12-4) and the New York Giants (13-3). In short, 4 of their 5 losses were against teams who have won the super bowl once in the last 3 years.

The key to Baltimore’s success is its ability to stop the opposition. The Ravens have allowed an average of only 15.2 points per game and have the second best ranked defense in the league, allowing only 261.1 yards per game to the opposition. Their defensive dominance becomes even more apparent when you look at how they performed in the games that they have won. Baltimore has allowed an average of only 12.2 points per game when they did not face an opponent who currently has a winning percentage of at least 75%.

Miami is a mediocre team offensively at best, averaging 21.6 points per game, ranking 21st in the league. One thing you can count on is that if the Dolphins hope to have any kind of chance at winning this game, they will have to make sure that they shutdown Baltimore’s offense. Honestly, Miami will likely not score more than 13 points.

The Ravens surprisingly are one the more productive offensive teams in the league. They scored an average of 24.1 points per game ranking 11th in the league. As a result, the Ravens often blew out their opponents. They won each of their 11 games by an average margin of 16.2 points. Overall, Baltimore has been a very profitable team for sports bettors this season, going 12-4 ATS and 5-1 ATS as a favourite.

Expect this to be a low scoring, defensive battle. Both teams will focus heavily on running the ball but you can expect that Joe Flacco and his big arm will make a couple of attempts at the long ball. He completed 5 passes of over 25 yards in his previous contest and the Dolphins have given up 28 plays of over 25 yards this season. Baltimore’s veterans will step up and win this one for the team. Expect to see a big performance from Ray Lewis, Derek Mason and the one and only Ed Reed. Baltimore will easily cover by 10 points. This is it… My game of they year!!! Time to break your bookie! Lay a big one on the Ravens!!!
