Steve SmithPremium Pick: Carolina +3.5

Is anyone going to give Carolina any credit? I mean, they only managed to go 2-0, defeating the Chargers on the road without their superstar wide receiver Steve Smith… Last Sunday the Panthers proved that they have a lot of heart as they came back from a 14 point deficit to defeat the Bears. I really believe that the Panthers have to be one of the most underrated teams in league and that they will take the NFC South this year.

On the other hand, Minnesota at this point probably one of the most overrated teams as their running game seems to be the only thing that’s working for them.

When analyzing the numbers of the matchup of Carolina’s offense versus Minnesota’s defense, it appears Carolina has a slight advantage. The Panthers have averaged 302 yards and 23 points per game currently ranking 19th and 11th in those respective categories. Minnesota has allowed an average of 319 yards and 21points per game ranking 20th and 17th. Last year the Vikings were ranked 32nd in the league in passing yards allowed and this year currently rank 24th. When comparing the Carolina’s offense to Minnesota’s defense, there are 2 important things to consider. First, all star receiver Steve Smith did not play for Carolina in the first two games. He is a lethal weapon for Jake Delhomme to throw the ball to, especially against Minnesota’s weak passing defense. Second, the Panthers played one of the most defensively talented teams in the NFL last Sunday, the Chicago Bears. When one puts these two factors into place it appears that Carolina’s offensive numbers are a little deflated at the very least.

Minnesota has been able to move the ball on offense but has had immense difficulty converting on its opportunities. The Vikings currently rank 15th in yards gained but only 23rd in points scored. This is related to the fact that quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has struggled immensely. He’s averaged only 154 yards per game, has only completed 50.4% of his passes and has a poor rating of 64.8. He has one touchdown and an interception. However, his wide receivers are partially responsible for his poor performance as they dropped several passes last Sunday, including a potential touchdown. Coach Childress decided to go with backup QB Gus Frerotte for this coming Sunday. Maybe the Vikings can use a new face at QB to get back on the winning side, but Frerotte is clearly not the answer. Last year he threw 7 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and had a rating of 58.3 with the Rams.

This will be a tight, hard fought game. Minnesota will have to focus on running the ball as this is the only thing that appears to work for them. They currently rank 4th in yards gained on the ground. It is important to note that Adrian Peterson will not be at 100% since he is suffering a hamstring injury. Carolina will have the advantage of being able to mix up its offensive play calling by having the option of utilizing two talented running backs and a group of solid targets including receivers Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad as well as tight end Dante Rosario. The Vikings are 0-5 ATS in the last 5 games.

Prediction: Carolina 20 Minnesota 17
